Drivers break sound barrier

Gerlach - Fifty years after man broke the sound barrier in the air a British racing team yesterday set back-to-back supersonic runs that pushed the land speed record past the speed of sound. Richard Noble's jet-powered car, with RAF pilot Andy Green at the controls, ran 759.333 mph on its first run and 766.109 mph on the second, with the record (an average of the two) at 763.035 mph. The two runs in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, had to be made within an hour of each other for the record to be official.
