A disabled man was recovering in hospital last night after spending 20 hours in a river. Mr Neil Carlin (59) from Crolly, West Donegal, lost control of his motorised wheelchair on Wednesday evening and crashed into a small river near Annagry. When he failed to return home gardai were notified and an immediate search got underway.

Just before noon yesterday he was found knee-deep in the small river, sitting in the wheelchair and fully conscious. He told gardai he spent the night awake, fearing the worst if he went to sleep.

A Garda spokesman said that he is lucky to be alive.
