Srinagar - Indian authorities imposed a curfew yesterday in the southern Kashmiri town of Kishtiwar to prevent a possible communal backlash following the killing of 19 Hindus by Islamic militants.

Paramilitary police and army troops were called out to enforce the curfew. Kishtiwar's population is split evenly down the communal divide and the town has often witnessed Hindu-Muslim clashes.
