Beijing - It won four Oscars and was the first Chinese film ever to be nominated for Best Picture. But in China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a flop, writes Miriam Donohoe.
While the movie has passed the $100 million mark in box office receipts in the US, the first time a foreign film has done so, it has made no impact in the country where it was made. There are various reasons why the movie has failed to impress Chinese moviegoers. The main reason cited is that it did not have enough martial arts action, with no fighting at all in the first 15 minutes. Almost every major cultural export from China over the past 25 years that has succeeded in the West has failed at home.
