An 11 year old boy, Aaron O'Donovan, drowned in the Owenacurra River in Midelton, Co Cork, on Monday, bringing a second tragedy to his relatives within three years, Dick Hogan reports.

His first cousin, Philip O'Brien (13), died in 1993 not far from the scene of the latest drowning when he fell into the river.

At the time, Philip's father, Mr Tom O'Brien, unsuccessfully campaigned to have dangerous sections of the riverbank cordoned off to prevent further tragedies. Yesterday, he promised to redouble his efforts.

Aaron, a fifth class pupil at the local Christian Brothers' School, lost his footing while playing with friends on the riverbank.
