There are heaps of full bodied, inexpensive, red wines that will suit outdoor cooking down to the ground but for that savoury edge that suits char grilled carnivores' delights Spain has the edge. I love all the wines listed below with barbecued food, even if it's only boy scout burnt sausages but if you want to strike for the middle ground rich, round flavours, plenty of substance and the savoury element kept subtle choose Las Campanas Navarra Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 (Dunnes Stores, £5.49). A bargain far more satisfying than anything I found in the summer sales.
