BRITAIN: George Best was arrested yesterday over claims that he hit a woman as she tried to stop him getting into his ex-lover's house.

The former footballer voluntarily attended Staines police station in Surrey to be interviewed about Vicky Pope's accusation that he hit her outside Gina Devivo's home. Shortly afterwards, it emerged he had been arrested and was being held in custody at the station.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: "A 59-year-old man was arrested by Surrey police following an allegation of assault against a 34-year-old woman. The offence is alleged to have taken place in Ewell, Surrey."

Earlier yesterday, Phil Hughes, Best's agent, said he "categorically" denied any allegation of assault. Ms Pope told the Daily Mirror that Best smacked her in the face in front of her two children as she blocked his path to Ms Devivo's home.
