A Sri Lankan Airlines made an emergency landing at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport on today after a British passenger attempted suicide.

The 49-year-old is said to have cut his throat with a piece of broken mirror in the lavatory.

The plane, which had left London for Sri Lanka, landed in Turkey after crew members found the man in the lavatory with his neck bleeding, the Anatolia news agency reported.

A doctor on the plane stopped the bleeding and stitched the neck wound with the help of crew members.

He was hospitalized at a hospital near the airport, where doctors said despite blood loss, the cuts were not serious.

The passengers were flown to Sri Lanka aboard the same plane after the stopover.
