A four hour disruption of DART train services on the south side of Dublin yesterday evening was caused by the seizure of a brake on the water carriage of a train laden with ammonia Iarnrod Eireann confirmed last night.

A spokesman said the fault occurred near Shelton Abbey in Co Wicklow shortly before 2 p.m. and at no time was there any danger to local people or the crew.

He said safety procedures caused the four hour delay to passenger trains, which could not travel beyond Dalkey. The brake was eventually repaired, in Bray and the train continued on its journey.

Green MEP Ms Patricia Mc Kenna claimed last night the breakdown was another lucky escape from a potential environmental nightmare. She said 1.3 million people are put at risk several times a week because of these toxic transports.
