A bus skidded off a mountain highway in central Nepal today, killing at least 29 people, police said.

A bus skidded off a mountain highway in central Nepal today, killing at least 29 people, police said.

Another two dozen passengers were injured in the accident near the village of Dhaireni, about 160 miles west of the capital, Katmandu.

Details of the accident were not immediately known. Police officials reached by phone said passing motorists took the injured to hospitals.

Rescue workers have been sent to the area to help, the officials said.

The Sidhartha highway, where the accident occurred, passes through mountainous areas with hairpin turns and is often damaged by landslides.
