Georgian elegance in Dún Laoghaire

Carefully maintained home has original features and a family-friendly extension

An elegant house, White Lodge is one half of what was a large, two-storey house when it was built around 1804. Once the home of the Turkish Consulate in Ireland (a Dún Laoghaire man) White Lodge has been its own house for many years now. Evidence of its divided past can be seen in what were interconnecting doors to the left and right of the drawingroom fireplace. The gardens were at one time so grand they were open for viewing on the last Sunday of each month. Both garden and house are more manageable these days. The garden, to the side and rear, is in the style of an enclosed courtyard with paving and high greenery. The house has a 334sq m (3,595sq ft) floor space with four bedrooms (the main a full suite with study), two formal reception rooms, large conservatory, family/TV room and kitchen.

Extension

It has been a family home for the past 30 years and now the vendors are downsizing and selling through O’Mahony Auctioneers who will put White Lodge to auction on Thursday, May 26th with an AMV of €1.35 million. White Lodge has been given a lot of appreciative care through the years, as well as a family-friendly extension to the rear. Original features such as dado rails, cornicing, coving and doors, a servant call bell system, the classical aspects of the formal reception rooms and more are all still intact.

Conservatory

The formal drawingroom, in shades of gold and yellow, has an impressive ceiling rose and a 15ft high ceiling. Windows front and back have deep cills, working shutters and panels. There is a large marble fireplace. The formal diningroom is painted a cool, pale green and has an elegant, smooth wood fireplace and feature wall alcove. Striped wallpaper in the wide hallway helps emphasise its height and give drama to an arch to the rear of the house. A semi-circular conservatory overlooks the garden where there is bamboo, laurel, camellias, high evergreen trees and a granite wall. A family room has a stove and window over the patio, the smallish kitchen/ breakfastroom has a wide bay window, polished worktops and old-style wooden fittings.

The main bedroom suite includes an impressively fitted study, bedroom with wide bay window, dressingroom and an en suite in blue-grey tiling with Jacuzzi bath. Two other, high ceilinged bedrooms are to the rear and the fourth, up a couple of steps, has an eyrie-like privacy. The family bathroom has a high ceiling, sunken bath and deep cilled window.
