The soft leather orange Italian sofas, which cost €5,000 each, steal the show. Also competing for attention is the vibrant Paniker rug, €650, which gives the room another bold contemporary touch.

Known for mixing the old and the new, he has also included a pair of reproduction 19th century Burr walnut chests of drawers, €3,600 each, from French company Atelier as a nod to a more classical style. Also in the classical style is the pure crystal-based Edinburgh oblong lamp, €670, and the Pierre Frey €895 over-reach lamp behind the couch. The subtle soft grey linen wallpaper, which comes in 27" wide rolls, costs €105 per roll.

Another modern statement piece is the 1960s-design glass and perspex quadrant table which he chose for its simple unobtrusive design, €2,200. All of the furniture and accessories can be sourced through Peter Johnson Interiors by appointment. The oval mirror is from Hicken Lighting, €300. (1800 777077).

Karl Barnes from Formality (01 2808071) designed the terrace to be in keeping with interiors - "not overly co-ordinated" and a mix of Parisian and New York style. Instead of the ubiquitous lounger on the terrace, they put a "more convivial" all weather rattan sofa (€1,145) and low chairs (€840 each) from the Belgian Some range and a coffee table (not in the picture) which costs €395.

Linen embroidered Alice Tree cushions soften the look and cost €35 each. For the authentic terrace look, black metal lanterns,€60 each, and large boxwood balls, €895 each, which are low maintenance and able to withstand sun or shade - stand in zinc pots, €650 each. The long fibre glass planting trough is €365.

For a more formal experience there is a Fermob opera table, €485, armchair, €235, and carvers, €210 each. All of the furniture and accessories are available at Formality in Glasthule, co Dublin..
