Cork Jazz Festival update: Quercus bow out, but the show will go on

The festival loses one of its highlights, but Dave O’Rourke and Phil Ware are the perfect re-fit for the bill

Disappointing news just in of a late change to the bill of the Cork Jazz Festival. The Quercus trio – tipped in today’s Ticket as potentially the highlight of the festival – were to bring their wonderfully melancholic sound to the Triskel this Saturday night, but singer June Tabor has contracted laryngitis and has sent her apologies. We wish her a speedy recovery and Triskel artistic director Tony Sheehan says he’s determined to bring Quercus to Cork at some later date.

In the meantime, the good people at the Triskel have moved fast to make good the loss, and that Saturday-night slot will now be filled by something completely different – the gifted New York-based Irish guitarist Dave O’Rourke, ably accompanied by pianist Phil Ware and his hard-swinging trio.

There's nothing like jazz to keep the show on the road, and this impromptu session of four excellent musicians should go a long way to making up for the disappointment. It all kicks off at 8pm on Saturday in Triskel Christchurch. More at triskelartscentre.ie

In the meantime, here's a classic clip of Dave O'Rourke from a few years ago, duetting with the great pianist Larry Willis on RTE's Live at Three. And here is Phil Ware and his trio, playing one of his (and our) favourite Bond themes, Nobody Does It Better.
