One More Thing: Kleinrock’s ‘lo’ down on internet

Web Summit attendees were lucky enough to hear one of the fathers of the internet, Prof Leonard Kleinrock, give a talk on a history of the internet.

Kleinrock came up with the mathematical theory behind data packet transmission, the backbone of the internet.

While the first moon walk and the first telegraph transmission made for memorable speeches, the first internet message was simply a login that crashed before it was finished.

So the first internet message, he says, was simply “lo”.

Addressing concern about the future of the internet he added: “Privacy? We gave that up a long time ago with phonebooks and credit cards.”
