Daybreak at Gale Crater

Mars and Earth share various common traits. Both are terrestrial planets that formed in similar ways. The composition of each is comparable too, up to(...)

Mars is sometimes put forward as offering a “new home” if we poison the Earth’s environment or damage its weather systems. But is this something that (...)

An image provided by Nasa shows Jupiter’s north polar region, taken by the Juno spacecraft 195,000km away from the planet. Unlike the equatorial region’s familiar structure of belts and zones, the poles are mottled with rotating storms of various sizes, similar to giant versions of hurricanes on Earth. Jupiter’s poles have not been seen from this perspective since the Pioneer 11 spacecraft flew by the planet in 1974. Photograph: Nasa/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS via AP)

The ghostly sounds of the solar system’s “baddest” planet Jupiter have been beamed back to Earth. Nasa spacecraft Juno has captured the best views o(...)

The Red Planet

Dark streaks on the sides of Martian craters. Possibly water. Streams that flow only in the planet’s summer. Possibly. And life? All we can say for ce(...)

The Mars rover Opportunity has set a world record for the quickest marathon yet completed, covering the required 26.2 miles or 42km in a breathtaking (...)

In a handout image, an artist’s rendering of what researchers believe Mars looked like around 4 billion years ago, when water now frozen in the planet’s icecaps formed a great northern ocean. NASA estimates that water could have covered about 19 percent of the red planet’s surface. Photograph: Greg Shirah/NASA via The New York Times

Mars once had a large ocean of water, some parts of it more than a kilometre and a half deep. But most of this was lost into space leaving Mars the de(...)

People are being invited to sign up for a free “boarding pass” for trips into space. The plan is to start small with orbital flights but will later in(...)

Dr Joseph Roche: Shortlisted for mission to Mars

Growing up on a small farm in Kildare, Joseph Roche spent many clear nights gazing at the stars, dreaming of becoming an astronaut. He couldn’t have k(...)

Nasa’s Curiosity rover used the Mars Hand Lens Imager to capture this set of 55 high-resolution images, which were stitched together to create this full-colour self-portrait. Photograph: JPL-Caltech/Malin Space Science Systems/Nasa/Reuters

Analysis of Martian soil by Nasa’s ongoing Mars Curiosity rover has turned up a surprising amount of water, as well as a chemical that will make a sea(...)

For a man who has just been introduced as a modern Isambard Kingdom Brunel or Henry Ford, the 41-year-old Elon Musk looks nervous and hesitant (...)
