Real Madrid have denied trying to lure Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez to the Bernabeu.

Benitez, a former youth team coach at Madrid, said this week he turned down an offer from his former employers. But the Spanish giants rejected Benitez's claims.

A Madrid statement read: "In regards to the comments attributed to current Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez, which were published by a media source, Real Madrid wish to deny any negotiations with said professional, or any other, concerning his possible incorporation to the club next season.

"Real Madrid, as reiterated by the president [Ramon Calderon] and the board of directors, are counting on prestigious coach Fabio Capello, who still has two years remaining on his three-year contract."
