Queen's University 0-8 Athlone IT 0-6:Sigerson Cup/First round: James McCartan's Queen's University, Belfast, progressed to the quarter-finals after a hard-fought victory in Athlone yesterday.

Despite playing with a reasonably strong crossfield breeze in the first half, Queen's led by just 0-4 to 0-3 at half-time. Athlone had led 0-3 to 0-0 with points from Matt Mitchell (two) and his Offaly team-mate John Reynolds.

Athlone made poor use of the wind in the second half as Queen's landed three points through John Clarke. Athlone had a great chance to equalise late on but substitute James Coughlan missed a free in the last minute.

A well-struck free by Queen's substitute Aidan Fagan sealed victory.
