SOCCER:SHAY GIVEN believes manager Giovanni Trapattoni should be given a new contract with the Republic of Ireland as soon as possible, regardless of how the Euro 2012 qualifiers end, reports MIGUEL DELANEY
The FAI are not due to consider the issue until this campaign finishes, but Given also said such a decision would make it likelier he prolong his own international career beyond next summer.
We should get it done and put it to bed. Because you guys (the media) will be speculating if its not.
Ive said many times I think were very privileged to have him as a manager because hes such a great coach.
“I just think for such a small nation to have someone world renowned in football is fantastic. I would hope he would extend his contract, definitely, and be here for another couple of years.
As to whether that would convince Given to extend his own international career, the goalkeeper conceded: “Possibly. Ill speak to Trap after this and see what the best thing to do is.”
Talking in Dublin yesterday to launch ESPNs Premier League coverage, Given was also confident of topping the qualification group.
“You have to be. It’s not going to be easy. Hopefully we beat Slovakia. Then its a shoot-out at the OK Corral.
“Because it really comes down to that big game in Moscow. They beat us in Dublin, theyre on their home patch and all that but it kind of goes out the window when it comes to match day.
“What matters are these games. I think the whole country should be excited. I know the players are because its really in our hands. Its a big chance for us.”
