Any fairway is a fair way

Meg Mallon took an unconventional path to the first-round lead of the US Women's Open at Libertyville, Illinois

Meg Mallon took an unconventional path to the first-round lead of the US Women's Open at Libertyville, Illinois. She deliberately played her tee shot on the 14th onto the 13th fairway. Her par there helped her to a 68 and a one-stroke lead over Australians Karrie Webb and Shani Waugh.

The 406-yard 14th has an angled pond and a bunker on the left of the fairway. Mallon did not fancy the standard tee shot. "(In practice) I had hit it in the water; I hit it in the bunker. I felt like going over to the 13th fairway was the better option."

The move did not break any rule, but Webb, who made a routine par at the 14th, said: "I'm not even going to think about where she hit it."
