Virtual visit to the White House

Sir, – When the Taoiseach begins his virtual chat with President Biden on St Patrick’s Day, perhaps Micheál could have a crystal bowl of shamrock on his desk. He could then push it off-screen (maybe using a hurling stick) while simultaneously an identical bowl would then be seen sliding into view in front of Joe on the Oval Office’s desk. It would be sure to garner a few views on social media. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I am absolutely incensed and incredulous that the Taoiseach did not take the opportunity to lead by example and announce much sooner that he would not be visiting the US on St Patrick’s Day this year. Instead, he explained that he would wait and see if President Joe Biden would issue an invitation before making his decision. What a pity that we, as a sovereign nation, did not have the courage to announce to the US that because of the pandemic we would not be travelling this year. Too little too late, as usual with Micheál Martin. Yet another missed opportunity. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – It is reassuring to know that people in Washington understood, while our Taoiseach did not, that Micheál Martin’s trip was not essential during a global pandemic. Now Mr Martin is left with zero trip and less respect. – Is mise,
