Pan-fried

 

Sir, – I share Ultan Ó Broin’s annoyance at the use of the word “hosepipe” rather than just “hose” (July 4th).

Similarly, in a restaurant, I can’t understand why I’m offered “pan-fried” chicken. I’m conscious that it distinguishes the food from “deep-fried”, but is it really necessary to include the word “pan” at all? – Yours, etc,
