Great Krapps

Sir, – Christopher Fitz-Simon (March 20th) states that the late David Kelly was the first person to play the part of Krapp in Ireland in 1959. Without wishing to detract from the many very fine performances of that role which were given by David Kelly, I wish to differ from the often expressed view that he was the first person in Ireland to perform the part on stage. I have a distinct memory of the part being played by Michael McCabe in the tiny Studio Theatre Club, Upper Mount Street in 1956.

Incidentally, David Kelly was a member of that motley company and in the same season played, with great panache, the part of a young man in Peter Ustinov's play Blow Your Own Trumpet . – Yours, etc,
