Sir, – Your Editorial (August 6th) on Britain’s second chamber serves as a reminder that it is impossible to reform some institutions due to party and vested interests and that the only satisfactory approach is to seek its abolition. Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s proposal recognises this political reality and by putting the matter to the people the Taoiseach engages in the ultimate democratic exercise. – Yours, etc,
