Benefits of a vegan diet

Sir, – I wholeheartedly endorse what Jennifer White (December 29th) says regarding switching to a vegan diet in 2016.

Each year a staggering 65 billion land animals are killed for food and the majority of them endure lives of unimaginable suffering inside factory farms.

Given that we humans have absolutely no requirement for flesh – or cow milk or bird eggs – in our diet, how can we possibly justify inflicting this suffering on so many inoffensive and defenceless animals?

But, as Jennifer White points out, there are more reasons than this to adopt a vegan diet. A plant-based diet is better for our health and better for the environment. Undoubtedly a vegan diet is a winner for all. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Perhaps we can reach a compromise on this contentious subject and restrict ourselves to veganism, Irish-style – only eat animals that eat grass. – Yours, etc,
