Backstop: a temporary little arrangement?

A chara, – I believe that British representatives are on the mainland still insisting that the backstop must be temporary and not permanent.

If memory serves me correctly, the House of Commons passed a law during the Napoleonic wars in which they introduced income tax as a temporary measure to help fight the wars.

So far that temporary measure has lasted just over 200 years.

Perhaps the EU could negotiate a similar measure to ensure an agreement on the backstop this time as well? – Is mise,
