Peig Sayers meets Anton Chekhov?

Sir, – Dr Victor Bayda’s appointment as Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga to the Kerry Gaeltacht is a unique and remarkable event in the long, rich but checkered history of our native language (“From Russia with Grá: Muscovite appointed to promote Irish in Kerry,” Harry McGee, February 21st).

This welcome cross-cultural assignment challenges boundaries of tradition and conjures up metaphors, bringing to my mind an ethereal confluence of two great masters in the art of the short story, our own Peig Sayers in the telling and Dr Bayda’s Anton Chekhov in the writing. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL GANNON,

Kilkenny.
