A5 upgrade is welcome, but why not a train service too?

Donegal is the ‘forgotten county’ when it comes to rail system

Sir, – I have just heard the good news that the A5 is at last getting an upgrade (“A5 ruling a ‘relief’ for bereaved families”, Ireland, October 6th).

Living in Co Donegal since the early 1980s, this road to Dublin has always been the worst part of our journey.

Do you think any of the enlightened planners would now consider running a rail link alongside it to Monaghan and hopefully onwards to Dublin, stopping at Castleblayney, Carrickmacross, Ardee, etc? Why not do all the work at once rather than, in a few years’ time, deciding to build a rail link at a much higher expense?

Just think of the daily commuter traffic this could take off the roads and alleviate stress and time-wasting.

The last train left Donegal in 1959. We are truly “the forgotten county” when it comes to a rail service. – Yours, etc,

EILEEN BANNAN,

Letterkenny,

Co Donegal.
