Sir, – To add to Marion Walsh’s letter (A day for the races, April 28th), as a male employee of Guinness I also benefited from the extra day’s annual leave, called “Queen’s Day”.

Indeed, three years before visit of the queen to Dublin, the Guinness company marked the queen’s golden jubilee in 1897 by giving each labourer an extra week’s wages, a gesture which benefited both my grandfathers who had been employed by the company from 1891. – Yours, etc,
