Disabilities and the Government

It appears our desperate calls for help were not deemed desperate enough even though we are one of the main groups in Irish society most at risk from poverty

Sir, – The Government has now decided that it is time for a cost-of-living support due to the ongoing war in the Middle East and the impact it is having on the cost of fuel and home heating oil.

Since the last budget, Access For All Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association and the Disability Federation of Ireland have campaigned for a €400 emergency cost-of-living payment due to increasing day-to-day costs and the fact our members are at most risk of poverty but alas, we were told “No”.

What has changed?

It appears our desperate calls for help were not deemed desperate enough even though according to the Economic and Social Research Institute we are one of the main groups in Irish society most at risk from poverty.

Again, it shows us our place in Irish society and after all the talk and promises in the 2024 General Election, as people with disabilities and carers, the simple fact is that we really don’t matter. – Yours, etc,

BERNARD MULVANY,

Cofounder Access For All Ireland,
