A Polish man who suffered serious injuries when he fell from a crane hoist while power-hosing a building in the centre of Roscommon town on Good Friday died yesterday from his injuries.

This brings to 13 the number of workplace or work-related deaths in the State so far this year.

The total at the same point last year was 22, according to the Health and Safety Authority (HSA). Dozens of shoppers in the town witnessed the accident.

Witnesses said that when the man fell, his head struck the ground.

The victim has not yet been named by gardaí.

The incident was last night being investigated by the Garda and the HSA. The crane hoist is now in the possession of Roscommon Garda and will be forensically examined later this week.

The man was taken to hospital immediately after the incident and he remained in a critical condition over the weekend. He died yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman for the HSA said last night it had been notified of the incident by gardaí.

"We had an inspector on the site quite quickly after the incident, and we are currently conducting an investigation," he said.

The spokesman could not estimate how long the investigation would take.
