Fresh talks are to begin at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) on Monday after doctors suspended their industrial action at Waterford Regional Hospital yesterday evening - and the employers suspended their disputed rosters.

The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), which represents 130 non-consultant hospital doctors at the 450-bed facility, said they were suspending their action after an afternoon of intense negotiations at the LRC between the IMO and the Health Service Employers Agency.

The IMO said the hospital strike committee had decided to lift its action to allow a breathing space for talks.

The health board welcomed the decision and the restoration of normal services for patients from today, with all scheduled outpatient and theatre activity to go ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, a separate work-to-rule by 60 IMO members at Tullamore General Hospital ended last evening after three days. That action is due to resume next week.

The Minister for Health and Children, Mr Martin, last night welcomed the return to full patient services at the two hospitals today. He praised the employers for "their positive and flexible approach".
