A US-registered ambulance jet apparently being used to ferry a patient from Ecuador to Washington DC crashed into a hangar at a Panama City airport and burst into flames, killing at least four people.

Rescue workers have recovered four charred bodies, but there were reports that as many as six people may have been aboard.

The plane crashed into an unoccupied hangar at Panama City's Tocumen international airport as it tried to take off early yesterday.

"All those aboard were killed," a police spokesman said. "It was an ambulance jet that had arrived from Ecuador and was en route to Washington."
