London - Two people were killed yesterday, and a lifeboat on a rescue mission capsized in stormy waters as high winds battered much of southern England.

Mr Robert Bridger (70), died instantly when the branch of a tree struck him on the head after it was blown down in the wind in West Sussex.

A 51-year-old man died after being hit by flying debris dislodged during a gale. The victim was walking along a canal path in Somerset, when he was hit by part of a tin roof.
