Two people have appeared in court today charged in the relation to the seizure of more than €6,000 worth of cigarettes at Dublin Airport.

Officers arrested an 18 year-old woman and a 38 year-old man, both Lithuanian nationals, after they arrived on a flight from Riga, Latvia yesterday. More than 16,000 cigarettes were discovered following a baggage search.

The L&M brand cigarettes are valued at about €6,520 by Revenue Customs officials, and could represent a loss of revenue of €5,358.

The woman appeared before Blanchardstown District Court and was remanded on €300 bail, while the man appeared in the Bridewell and was remanded on €1,000 bail. Both were charged with being concerned in the evasion of a duty of excise on excisable products

They are due to appear again at Dublin District Court on August 4th.

The latest arrests bring to four the number of people held for cigarette smuggling offences this week by Customs officers at the airport.

Separately, a quantity of equine and bovine anti-flu vaccines were seized when customs officers searched baggage belonging to a 72-year-old American national.

The products are banned from importation except under licence, and it is believed they were destined for the black market.
