However, this rudimentary lesson appears to have been lost on one unsuspecting burglar in Britain.

The individual in question was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery after police followed a trail of footprints in the snow.

The scene of the crime was a house in Sandy Cross Lane, Heathfield, East Sussex.

The owner called police after disturbing someone attempting to break into the property.

Shortly after arriving at the scene, police found a set of footprints which led to another house in the area.

A short time later, police officers arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted burglary

The incident happened on Sunday but details of the case emerged at a bail hearing in court today.

The suspect was released on bail until January 28th, a spokeswoman for Sussex Police said.
