Sixth Premier League postponed

The big freeze is continuing to decimate this weekend's action in England and Scotland

The big freeze is continuing to decimate this weekend's action in England and Scotland. Wigan's clash with Aston Villa became the sixth Premier League match of the weekend to be called off this morning.

The move followed a pitch inspection, called after the undersoil heating system at the DW Stadium failed on Friday evening.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said: "We are devastated because the club has worked so hard in these freak weather conditions to make the area surrounding the stadium safe.

"The pitch has never been the problem, until now.

"I have to congratulate our safety team at the stadium who have worked tirelessly to try and clear the area of ice and snow over the past few days. Our ground staff have also spent several nights at the stadium making the sure the pitch remained playable.''

The game joins those between Burnley and Stoke, Chelsea and Hull, Fulham and Portsmouth and Sunderland and Bolton, plus Sunday's match between Liverpool and Tottenham, in being called off.
