SERBIA: Croatian Serb wartime leader Mr Milan Martic and former commander Mr Mile Mrksic have turned themselves in to face war crimes trial in the Netherlands, the latest in a string of Serb indictees to surrender to the UN tribunal under pressure from Belgrade.

Mr Martic (56) the former president of the self-proclaimed Serb Republic of Krajina, and Mr Mrksic (54) commander of Serb forces who laid siege to Vukovar for three months in 1991, were detained after arriving in the Netherlands on a regular flight from Belgrade.

Their surrender was welcomed in Croatia where government forces fought a war with Belgrade-backed Serb separatists who captured one-third of the territory.

Mr Martic said "I am not guilty" before leaving Belgrade and vowed to "fight for the truth about my people" at the trial.
