The Irish Alliance for Europe said today it was heartened by latest IFA poll findings that it said showed a rural swing to a Yes vote on the Lisbon Treaty.

Ken Curtin, Campaign Co-ordinator of the Irish Alliance for Europe said, “The results of today’s IFA telepoll (Yes 45%, No 25%) confirm our belief that in rural Ireland there is now a significant shift towards the Yes side.

"This morning’s national poll was taken at a time when the dust had hardly settled on the IFA’s endorsement of Yes. Now, just a few days later the effects of this are beginning to show.”

According to the Irish Times/TNS mrbi poll results published today, the number of people intending to vote No has almost doubled to 35 per cent (up 17 points) since the last poll three weeks ago, while the number of the Yes side has declined to 30 per cent (down 5 points).

Mr Curtin added: “It is very much in the interests of farm families that Ireland’s place in the centre of Europe, acting in their best interest, remains well into the future.

"This is necessary not just in tackling [Commissioner Peter] Mandelson’s WTO proposals but in terms of all future international farming issues that come to the table including the threat of poor quality food imports from South America."
