Two PSNI officers were hurt last night during disturbances following the switching on of Belfast city centre's Christmas lights.

Two people were arrested for public order offences.

Police officers making an arrest on Castle Street was surrounded by what a PSNI spokesman described as "a hostile crowd" shortly after the ceremony ended.

A short time later, a crowd started throwing bottles and missiles at police vehicles at Carlisle Junction. One police vehicle was damaged and two officers received minor injuries.

Clashes later  broke out on Carlisle Circus in north Belfast at around 9.45pm. A large group was involved in violent incidents, resulting in the arrest of four youths, aged between 15 and 19, for public order offences.
