President calls for closer Scottish links

THE President, Mrs Robinson, has called for closer links between Ireland and Scotland, to explore common interests.

She also said a deeper understanding of the historic links between both countries could help in the quest for peace in Northern Ireland.

Mrs Robinson made her call in a speech in Glasgow yesterday at the close of a three-day private visit to Scotland.

"With so much in common there is an undeniable momentum for establishing more structured opportunities for us to meet, learn from each other and explore issues together."

Calling for closer understanding of links between Scotland and Ireland, she said: "A deeper recognition of the range and complexity of the inter-relationships between the peoples of Scotland and Ireland can, I believe, help the process of creating space for more complex senses of identity within Northern Ireland."

. Meanwhile, it has been announced that the President is to make a two-day official visit to the Isle of Man beginning on July 6th. During her visit President Robinson will perform the opening ceremony at the island's new national heritage centre, "The House of Manannan", which celebrates the Isle of Man's Viking, Celtic and maritime heritage.
