Assistant state pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is this evening carrying out postmortems on the bodies of two people found shot dead in Shannon, Co Clare.

The Garda has also launched an investigation into the circumstances behind the two deaths.

The bodies of Ms Geraldine Kissane (23) of Cluain Aire, Shannon and Mr Mark Simms (32) of Drumgeeley, Shannon, were found outdoors on the Cluain Aire housing estate when shots were heard shortly after midnight.

A sawn-off shotgun was found near the bodies. A Garda spokesperson said no-one else is being sought in relation to the deaths.
