The new Prime Minister of Portuguese, Mr Jose Socrates, has said today he would seek to hold a referendum on the European Union constitution in December 2005.
He would seek to have the Portuguese constitution amended to allow a referendum on the EU charter to be held jointly with municipal elections in December, Socrates said in an address shortly after he was sworn in.
