The national average price of petrol has fallen during the month of December according to a survey carried out by the AA.

The average price of petrol now stands at €0.986 per litre, down 3.5 cent since November. Diesel prices also fell, down 2.8 cent to its current average of €0.975 per litre.

"Prices have risen relentlessly all through the year. They remain far higher than they were in January, 90.6 cent, but at least they have come down somewhat and they seem to be set to fall again," AA public affairs manager Mr Conor Faughnan said.

However, Mr Faughnan warned motorists to shop around saying that the AA survey revealed price differences of more than 10 cent between places.

"Motorist should become a lot more price fussy. There is just no reason for paying any more for petrol than you need to, and even a few cent adds up to a lot of money in a year's motoring," Mr Faughnan added.
