Nortel has opened a new $5 million (€3.67 million) global customer and technology centre at its Galway campus.
The centre, which is responsible for developing customer contact centre applications for global markets, was officially opened by the Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Quality and Law Reform, Frank Fahey.
Speaking at the launch of the new facility, Mr Fahey said the company should be congratulated on its 25-year heritage in Ireland. "Nortel has developed rapidly since its arrival here and we are delighted that its Irish-based operation is continuing to play a key role in its global transformation," Mr Fahey said. "Today´s opening speaks volumes to the depth, quality, expertise and loyalty of the Irish workforce in the West region."
The new centre is involved in the development of contact centre solutions that incorporate multimedia capabilities such as instant messaging and video. The Centre will also showcase of applications that can be tailored towards markets such as healthcare, education and finance.
Nortel's EMEA president, Darryl Edwards, described the opening as a "great day for Nortel and Galway". "It underscores the global importance of the role that the Galway campus plays for the company," he said.
