Pope John Paul II today promoted new Cardinal Walter Kasper to president of the Pontifical Council Promoting Christian Unity after the resignation of Cardinal Edward Cassidy for old age.

Kasper, who will be 68 on Monday, was made cardinal last month. He was previously secretary of the council promoting unity among Christian denominations and was succeeded by Marc Oullet in that position.

In a series of nominations, the pope also appointed Giampaolo Crepaldi as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Crepaldi replaces Diarmuid Martin who will be observer of the Holy See at the United Nations in Geneva.
