The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has had to cancel a spring tour and a children’s concert because of budgetary constraints.

The orchestra was due to perform with pianist Barry Douglas in concerts in Galway, Limerick and Cork between April 12th and 14th. A Musical Adventure: A Family Concert for Young Children, scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 27th, at the National Concert Hall, has also been cancelled.

The cancellations are indicative of the financial pressures RTÉ is under, with director general Noel Curran warning in a letter to staff last week that further cuts may be looming.

The orchestra, the biggest of five performing groups funded by RTÉ, employs 89 musicians.
