World and Olympic champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique won the 800 metres at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Grand Prix Final in Melbourne this morning.

Mutola's earned US$50,000 for the victory when she crossed the finishing line in a time of one minute 59.78 seconds, beating Briton Kelly Holmes by 0.24 seconds with Austrian world silver medallist Stephanie Graf third in 2:00.40.

Mutola went into the IAAF Grand Prix final in second place on the overall women's standings behind Romanian 1500 metres world silver medallist Violeta Szekely who was racing later on Sunday.

Moroccan 3000m steeplechase world record-holder, Brahim Boulami, also won on Sunday in a time of 8:16.14, half a second ahead of Kenyan world and Olympic champion Reuben Kosgei, with fellow Kenyan Stephen Cherono third.

Poland's Olympic champion Kamila Skolimowska, 18, won the women's hammer throw with a new junior world record of 71.71 metres from Australia's Bronwyn Eagles and Russia's Olga Kuzenkova.

"I am very excited. I think Australia is very good for me," Skolimowska said.

Skolimowska's previous personal best was the world junior record mark of 71.16 at the Olympics in Sydney in September 2000.
