Bucharest More than 5,000 cases of viral meningitis have been detected in Romania since July in an epidemic which has proved difficult to eradicate, the health ministry said yesterday.

"No specific treatment to cure viral meningitis exists anywhere in the world," the ministry said. "There is no vaccination available to immunise the population." The number of cases has risen by more than 200 in the past week to 5,090.
