A man has been shot dead near Finglas in Dublin.

The shooting happened at about 5.15pm at Coldwinters, just north of Finglas off the N2 Dublin to Derry road.

A Garda spokesman said the man was believed to be in his 30s.

He was removed to Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

"The scene has been preserved for technical examination," the Garda spokesman said.

The man's death is the second shooting fatality in Dublin in less than 24 hours. One man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a shooting in Tallaght, west Dublin, last night.

Fine Gael justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said the "horrendous shooting" was "continued proof that the Government's priorities do not include tackling crime".

He said the Government's legislative record in the Dáil had been "risible".

"Cold blooded shootings on the streets of Dublin are now tragically commonplace. Murder and attempted murder causes less and less revulsion in the minds of our citizens. This is a very disturbing state of affairs to have arrived at. How many people will have to be murdered before this Minister for Justice even begins to take the remedial action required to address the issue?"

"Fine Gael produced two bills to address issues directly related to today's incident, the Criminal Justice (Violent Crime Prevention) Bill and the Criminal Law (Admissibility of Evidence) Bill. We are responding to rising crime with constructive attempts to get effective legislation passed but this Government seems to lack the will and the ability to get anything done to stem the tide of killing."
