Man held in Carlow over woman's death

The woman, named locally as Ciara Campbell (22), was discovered after a call was made to the emergency services at about 1.30pm yesterday in the bathroom of her terraced house in Ardmore Gardens, an estate close to Carlow town centre.

The man now in Garda custody was found at the scene and taken to St Luke's hospital in Kilkenny to recieve treatment for minor injuries.

He is being held at Carlow Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Ms Campbell's four-year-old son, Jamie, who was in the house at the time, was uninjured and is in the care of relatives.

Ms Campbell's body was moved to Dublin this morning for a postmortem examination. It revealed that she had been stabbed to death.
